Education Is the Most Powerful Weapon Which You Can Use To Change the World

by | 11 Nov 23

Alright folks, confession time. You know that catchy blog title? Well, I didn’t come up with it. Nope, not me. I swiped it straight from the great Nelson Mandela. Eeek! I mean, of all people to steal from! I hope you forgive me. 🙈

I had another title in mind: ‘Igniting the Passion: Making an Impact in Education’. But let’s be right, compared to Mandela’s wisdom, it sounds like a slogan for a mediocre motivational seminar. So here we are. Sorry, Nelson (not sure I deserve to be on first-name terms either 😬).

But enough about my thievery, let’s dive into the meat of the matter.

This is for you, the Customer Success Managers (CSMs), the Salespeople, and the leaders guiding these teams in the Education Services and EdTech markets.

You’re dealing with headteachers, teachers, multi-academy trust leaders – folks who genuinely care about their work. They’re not just clocking in! They’re driven by something deep within, a burning desire to shape young minds positively, to weather the storms and challenges, all for the betterment of their students’ education.

Now, why am I telling you this? Because you need to feel that fire too. Not to boost sales, not to increase revenue, not even to improve retention rates. No! You need to share their passion, their commitment to making a difference in the lives of our future generations.

Once you begin to comprehend this burning desire, once you truly understand its significance, you’ll find it hard not to catch the flame. And when you do, the benefits will follow: increased sales, greater revenue, improved retention rates. These are not the goals, but the beautiful byproducts of sharing that profound desire to impact students positively.

So how can you light that spark within yourself or your team? How can you deepen your understanding and appreciation of education’s value and importance?

Well, sit tight because I’m going to share with you three hot tips that I used in my EdTech business that helped us shift our perspective, embrace the desire, and reap the rewards!

A Word Of Warning

Once you get a taste of this, once you feel that spark, you’ll probably be hooked for life. I mean, I tried to step away from the Education industry once. But, I missed it. Missed it so much that I just had to come back.

Why? Simple. Being surrounded by education professionals, making a real difference in students’ lives…there’s nothing quite like it. It’s fulfilling in ways you can’t even imagine until you’re right there in the thick of it. And let me tell you, it’s the absolute best place to be, hands down. Best industry to work in, if you ask me.

Alright, alright, I’ll stop gushing now. You’re here for some practical advice! Well, buckle up, because here are my top three tips to help you, and your team, ignite that passion for making a real difference.

Tip 1: Share Powerful Stories

You know what can really light a fire under your team? Sharing success stories. And I’m not talking about sales figures or revenue growth. I’m talking about real stories of real students whose lives were transformed by the products or services your company offers.

Let me share something with you. Right now, I’m working with a company that’s all about improving reading skills. They’ve got this fantastic tool that helps teachers get a deep understanding of how well their pupils comprehend what they’re reading, both when reading out loud and silently.

Recently I was in a primary school, helping with reading assessments. And the tool flagged something interesting – we identified that one of the pupils might need an eye test. Now, this student was smart and could understand everything they read, but they struggled with reading fluently. It was well below average for their age.

I’ve since found out that the pupil went for an eye test. And guess what? Turns out, they needed glasses. Fast forward a month, and the headteacher told us that this pupil is now wearing glasses, happier at school, and making progress in not just reading, but in all subjects. Because let’s face it, reading isn’t just for ‘English’. It’s crucial for Maths, History, Languages, you name it. All of it!

Now, imagine sharing a story like this across your company. Imagine how it could inspire your team to see the incredible impact they can have on our future generations. Amazing!

Tip 2: Connect with the Users

This one will really ignite your passion for education! Talking to the people who use your product or service. I mean, really talking to them. Whether they’re senior leaders, teachers, or the students themselves, having a chat with them can give you a front-row seat to the difference you’re making.

Remember that story I told you earlier about the pupil who needed glasses? Now, imagine you’re new to the team, and I arranged for you to talk to that school. You get to ask them about how our software made a difference in that pupil’s life. You get to hear about how they are doing now, how that one moment boosted their confidence, improved their learning experience, and even their overall wellbeing. Pretty powerful stuff!

But wait! What if your product doesn’t directly impact students? Maybe it’s something that saves teachers time. Well, good news – it’s still making a difference! Go ahead, talk to those teachers who’ve found extra hours in their day thanks to your product. Ask them how it’s changed their work life, their work-life balance, and their general morale.

Let’s face it, teaching can be a pressure cooker – high demands, heavy workload. But if your product can lighten that load even a little, you’re making a difference. And here’s the amazing part – happier, less stressed teachers will deliver better learning experiences. So, yes, even a simple time-saving tool can transform pupils’ daily school lives.

And trust me, there’s no feeling quite as rewarding as that!

Tip 3: Encourage Continuous Learning

If you’re a team leader, can I share a little secret with you? One that could make a big difference? Here it is: Cultivate a culture of continuous learning within your team. The more your people understand the ins and outs of the education landscape, the better they’ll grasp the challenges schools face. And guess what? That understanding can shape their role and help them make a real difference.

Now, you might be thinking, “But I’m not a manager,” or “Where can I learn all this stuff?” Well, I’ve got a hot tip for you. Sign up for the next session of TeacherTapp’s ‘Schools 101: A crash course in what you need to know to work with schools’. It’s an eye-opener, trust me. Whether you’re a newbie to the Education market or a veteran, it’s a fantastic refresher. I’ve been ‘in Education’ since 2003, and I still find it enlightening. Plus, you’ll get the latest data and info, which is always a win when you’re chatting with schools and MATs.

Okay, time for a little shameless self-promotion. We’re specialists in training sales and customer success folks on how to build meaningful relationships with customers and prospects in schools and MATs. But let me be clear – we’re not about teaching ‘sales’. Nope, we’re all about tapping into that natural desire to connect with educators and get those crucial meetings.

And here’s the thing – and I hope you’ve picked up on this from my blog – the reason we want to help you have all these conversations is because we believe in understanding. Understanding how you can help schools and MATs make a positive impact. On teachers. On students. On everyone in the schools you’re lucky enough to work with.

Remember, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela.

Ask yourself, are we just selling a product, or are we shaping the future?
